The aim of the Friends is to ensure the preservation of Shropshire's documentary and published heritage and the needs and means for caring for it.

The activities of the Friends include a programme of themed history days based on a subject or a locality, summer guided walks, an annual lecture and other events. A newsletter containing articles by members and updates on recent developments within the Archives is published four times a year.

A register of members' interests is maintained. Friends also help in basic conservation work, sorting and indexing on a volunteer basis at the Archives.
